How can I calculate the weight of an aluminum profile?
The most convenient way of doing it is to have the blueprint in .dwg format (Autocad) in natural scale (1:1). With this software, you can easily obtain the section or area of the drawn geometry, and then you should multiply it by 2.7 (the specific gravity of aluminum). The resulting figure will be equivalent to the weight in grams per meter of the profile.
What type of products can I do for extrusion?
Anything that is commercially or industrially useful in its factory presentation, that is, an aluminum strip. However, certain variables must be taken into account when analyzing the production feasibility of each specific product, therefore giving a general answer to this question is not possible, specific information about the characteristics of the product is needed.
Is an aluminum injection die the same thing?
No, it is not. They are completely different processes; therefore the toolkit, die-stamping and equipments involved in its production are different too.
Die life span
The life span of an aluminum extrusion die is calculated according to the tons of production or linear meters of the set of mouths obtained, and not in terms of a specific period of time. Some factors, like the profile general thickness, the aluminum alloy, the quality of the raw material, the good practices of the production process of every company, the quality and reliability of the die, the maintenance after every extrusion process, whether nitridings are carried out periodically, etc. influence positively or negatively (according to the magnitude of each factor) in the life span of a given die.
Precautions / conditions of use
The main aspect of good practice in extrusion is related basically to the mutual trust between supplier and user, assuming that the tools will be used under appropriate and controllable operative conditions. This means that the die should be preheated correctly (temperatures of around 440°C and with the appropriate gradient), the extrusion press should be properly aligned, there should not be parts displacements, appropriate sealed pressure should be ensured, billet temperature should be controlled (460/480 °C), the die should be properly cleaned and stored after production, periodic nitridings should be carried out, to harden the surface of the die and prolong its life span, the necessary cares should be taken during die assembling and disassembling, etc.
How can I obtain a quote?
To appropriately quote a die, the following information is requested:
1. Blueprint of the product (profile) to be extruded.
2. Dimensions of the available tools in the extrusion plant.
3. Bolster or support blueprint to be used with the die (preferable).
4. If you do not possess the information requested in 2 and 3 above, we are able to provide you with some of our clients’ plant, from which your extruded profile can be obtained.
